Feat. Lionel Hampton

This recording was produced in Culver City, California on April 29th 1929 featuring George Orendorff and Earl Thompson trumpets, Lawrence Brown trombone, Paul Howard clarinet, tenor sax, & leader, Charlie Lawrence alto sax & arranger, Lloyd Reese clarinet & alto sax, Harvey Brooks piano, Thomas Valentine banjo, Skip Jackson tuba, and Lionel Hampton drums.

*"Quality Shout" was composed by Alex Hill.

The "Quality Serenaders" were only an eight piece band until mid-1929 when the third brass and reed players joined. The group's two 1929 sessions, held on the 28th and 29th of April, feature very clever arrangements and incorporate a three piece mid-low range reed section with the middle part played by trombonist Laurence Brown. Similarly, when what seems to be three high reeds are heard one of the parts is actually being played by trumpeter George Orendorff. -Henry Davis
