A fixture of Storyville since around 1908, Richard M. Jones sometimes performed early on with a small band featuring Joe "King" Oliver.

He first departed New Orleans in 1918 bound for The Windy City on business to open a Chicago branch of the Clarence Williams Publishing Company.
