Earl Hines' Debut

This number was recorded in Richmond, Indiana on October 3rd 1923 with the following players Lois Deppe leader, Leon Smothers trumpet, Frank Brassfield trombone, Vance Dixon clarinet & alto sax, Harry Jackson alto sax, Charles Stoner tenor sax, Emmett Jordon violin, Earl Hines piano, ____ Dison banjo, Joe Watts tuba, and Harry Williams on drums.

*Congaine" was composed by Earl Hines.

A point of particular interest is that this was the first recording session of young, Earl 'Fatha' Hines' career and contains his very first recorded piano solo. The pianist had begun playing with Deppe's band when he was just seventeen and three years later was still with the group for its recording debut. Deppe, a popular singer, would take Earl along as his accompanist on concert trips to New York. The duo made history in 1921 as the first African American entertainers to be broadcast over the radio.
