Ann Pennington and Canadian-born actor Allen Kearns sing and dance their way through the song "You're Responsible" in the 1929 film "Tanned Legs"

Ann Pennington, born December 23rd 1893, was an actress, dancer, and singer who starred on Broadway in the 1910's and 1920's, most notable in the two shows "Ziegfeld Follies" and "George White's Scandals". She got her start as an actress in silent films with 1916's "Susie Snowflake" and debuted in her first talkie "Tanned Legs" in 1929 (from which this clip was taken). Her initial fame came as a "Shake and Quiver" dancer noted for her variation of the Black Bottom demonstrated in this clip.

Ann never stayed in one place too long and spent most of her career in New York living in hotel rooms with the exception of a number of years she spent in California. As times and tastes changed the world forgot all about Ann Pennington, the brilliant star of stage and screen. Having survived alone on government assistance for many years living in New York hotels overlooking 42nd Street, Ann Pennington died of a stroke at age seventy-seven on November 4th 1971.
