"1929 Talkie Short"

In the early sound film short "After Seben" filmed in 1929, white vaudeville comic & eccentric dancer James Barton performs numerous scenes in black-face at a Harlem nightclub.

Among Barton's routines is a memorable rendition of "Waiting For the Evening Mail".

Towards the films end, three Savoy Ballroom couples perform the latest dance style the "Lindy Hop" accompanied by "Chick Webb & His Orchestra" playing "Sweet Sue".

The best and last couple in the dance contest consists of the originator of the "Lindy Hop" 'Shorty' George Snowden and his partner.

Then the black-faced Barton further delights his Harlem club audience with a crazy eccentric dance set to the "Chick Webb Orchestra's" red hot version of the "Tiger Rag".

James Barton had a long career in film and TV, and is best remembered as Kit Carson in 1948 motion picture "The Time of Your Life" starring James Cagney, adapted from the 1939 William Saroyan play of the same title.
