Feat. King Oliver

This side was recorded in New York City during November of 1928 featuring King Oliver cornet & director, Ed Allen cornet, Ed Cuffee trombone, Arville Harris clarinet & alto sax, Benny Waters clarinet & tenor sax, Clarence Williams piano & vocals, Buddy Christian banjo, and Cyrus St Clair tuba.

*"I'm Through" was composed by Sidney Bechet.

From 1923 to 1927 Clarence Williams proved his worth as a lucrative producer organizing a minimum of two sessions every month. During this time he would also record more than three hundred sides released under his own name.

During the middle of this record Clarence Williams engages in some unforgettable call and response vocalizations with trombonist Ed Cuffee. Among the band's other important personnel present on this date were reed-men Arville Harris and Benny Waters. It was around this period while Waters was holding a standing gig at Small's Paradise with the "Charlie Johnson Orchestra" (aka his "Paradise Ten") that he would also appear on record with bands led by Fletcher Henderson and Claude Hopkins. -Matt Chauvin

King Oliver was present and doses contribute a little to the music on the other two items recorded at this session but, if he plays at all on "I'm Through", it is in the last few bars behind Williams and Cuffee and in the closing phrase for three brass. -Henry Davis
