"John Williams & Mary Lou"

Recorded in Chicago during January 1927 featuring Henry McCord trumpet, Bradley Bullett trombone, John Williams alto & bass sax, Mary Lou Burleigh piano, Joe Williams banjo, and Robert Price drums.

*"The Bumps" was composed by John Williams.

This was Mary Lou Williams' first recording session for which she appeared as Mary Lou Burleigh. The band is actually her future husband's group "John Williams' Synco-Jazzers".

In 1927 Mary Lou Williams married saxophonist John Williams. She met him at a performance in Cleveland where he was leading his "Syncopators", and with him moved to Memphis, Tennessee. There John assembled a local group that included Mary Lou on piano. In 1929 he accepted an invitation to join Andy Kirk's band in Oklahoma City, leaving 19 year old Mary Lou behind to take over leading the Memphis band for its remaining tour dates. Although she eventually joined her husband in Oklahoma City, at that time Mary Lou did not play with the band.
