James 'Stump' Johnson

(January 17th 1902 – December 5th 1969)

James "Stump" Johnson was born in Clarksville, Tennessee in 1902 and moved with his family to St. Louis around 1909. A self taught pianist he established himself as one of the most popular entertainers of the city's red light district.

Although he was mainly a blues pianist Stump Johnson scored his biggest hit with his 1929 recording of the hokum party song "The Duck's Yas-Yas-Yas".
