Feat. Eddie Durham

Recorded in Kansas City on October 27th 1930 featuring Bennie Moten director, Ed Lewis, Booker Washington, and Hot Lips Page trumpets, Thamon Hayes trombone, Eddie Durham trombone, guitar, & arranger, Harlan Leonard clarinet, alto, & soprano sax, Jack Washington clarinet, alto, & baritone sax, Woody Walder clarinet & tenor sax, Count Basie piano, Buster Moten piano-accordion, Leroy Berry banjo, Vernon Page bass brass, and Willie McWashington drums.

*"You Make Me Happy" was composed by Bennie Moten and Eddie Durham.

"You Make Me Happy" was also arranged by Eddie Durham who can be heard on the guitar solo (8 bars). This record was never released as a 78, being "rejected", probably for the lead trumpet (Hot Lips?) being a bit flat in the first chorus. However, this is another great Durham composition/arrangement, not far behind "I Wish I Could Be Blue". Featuring mostly 4 beat tuba and a trombone solo probably by Hayes, we also have here an amazing ascending chromatic parallel 9th's interlude, similar to what E.D. used 4 1/2 years later for Lunceford's record of Duke Ellington's "Bird of Paradise". -Daniel Weinstein
